What Is a Healthy Body Fat Percentage? (By Age and Gender)

By Calqpro Editorial Team · April 20, 2026 · 5 min read

Bottom line: For men, 10–20% body fat is considered fit to healthy. For women, 18–28%. Athletes are lower; above 25% (men) or 32% (women) is considered obese regardless of BMI.

BMI tells you if your weight is appropriate for your height — but says nothing about your body composition. Two people with the same BMI can have vastly different health profiles depending on how much of their weight is fat vs. muscle. Body fat percentage is a much more precise health metric.

How to Measure Body Fat Percentage

From most to least accurate:

Body Fat vs. BMI: Which Is Better?

BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. A 200 lb bodybuilder and a 200 lb sedentary person have the same BMI — but completely different health profiles. Body fat percentage correctly identifies the bodybuilder as healthy and the sedentary person as potentially at risk.

Use both: BMI for a quick population-level screen, body fat percentage for a more accurate personal health picture.
