How to Calculate GPA: Semester and Cumulative GPA Explained

By Calqpro Editorial Team Β· April 20, 2026 Β· 5 min read

Bottom line: GPA = total grade points Γ· total credit hours. An A in a 3-credit class = 12 grade points. Average those across all classes, weighted by credits.

GPA affects scholarships, graduate school admissions, job applications, and academic standing. Understanding exactly how it's calculated lets you set realistic targets and know exactly what grades you need to hit your goal.

How to Calculate Semester GPA (Step by Step)

Example: You took 4 classes this semester.

ClassCreditsGradeGrade Points (credits Γ— points)
English3A (4.0)12.0
Calculus4B+ (3.3)13.2
History3Aβˆ’ (3.7)11.1
Chemistry4B (3.0)12.0

Semester GPA = 48.3 Γ· 14 = 3.45

Cumulative GPA

Cumulative GPA combines all semesters. If you had a 3.2 GPA over 45 prior credits and earned a 3.45 GPA on 14 new credits:

Cumulative GPA = (3.2 Γ— 45 + 3.45 Γ— 14) Γ· (45 + 14) = (144 + 48.3) Γ· 59 = 3.26

How Hard Is It to Raise Your GPA?

The more credits you've completed, the harder it is to move your GPA. After 60 credits at 2.5 GPA, you'd need straight A's (4.0) for 2 full semesters (30 credits) just to reach a 2.9. This is why acting early matters so much.

The calculator below shows exactly what semester GPA you'd need to reach your target cumulative GPA based on how many credits you've completed.
