Frequently Asked Questions
- The ratio of coffee to water by weight. 1:16 means 1 gram coffee per 16 grams water. Lower numbers (1:14) = stronger; higher (1:18) = weaker.
- Coffee bean density varies hugely by roast and variety. A "tablespoon" of light vs dark roast have different masses. Weighing eliminates that error.
- Espresso is concentrated extraction at high pressure. The 1:2 ratio yields ~30g of coffee from a ~14g dose, the standard "double shot." Filter coffee uses much more water for a less concentrated drink.
- No — soft, mineral-balanced water tastes best. SCA recommends 150 ppm total dissolved solids. Distilled under-extracts; very hard water over-extracts and scales your machine.
- Espresso: very fine. Drip/pour-over: medium. AeroPress: medium-fine. French press: coarse. Cold brew: very coarse. Wrong grind is the #1 cause of bad coffee.
