Dog Years to Human Years: The Real Conversion (Not Γ—7)

By Jorge Sanchez Β· April 20, 2026 Β· 4 min read

Bottom line: The "multiply by 7" rule is a myth. Dogs age rapidly in their first two years, then slow down. A 2-year-old dog is equivalent to about a 42-year-old human.

The "one dog year equals seven human years" rule has been repeated so often that most people take it as fact. But it was never scientifically derived β€” it was just a rough average based on the observation that dogs live about 1/7th as long as humans. In reality, dog aging is not linear at all.

The Science: Why Dogs Age Faster Early On

A 2019 study published in Cell Systems by researchers at UC San Diego used DNA methylation (epigenetic clocks) to map dog aging to human aging. The formula they derived:

Human Age β‰ˆ 16 Γ— ln(dog age) + 31

Where ln is the natural logarithm. This formula reflects the reality that dogs develop extremely fast early in life β€” a 1-year-old dog has the developmental maturity of a ~31-year-old human.

Size Matters: Large vs. Small Dogs Age Differently

The formula above is best for medium dogs. Breed size significantly affects aging rate:
